Tips for planning your destination wedding in the Dominican Republic

Brainstorming destination wedding ideas can be daunting, especially where taking car of your guests is concerned.  It's easy to overlook the obvious if you're caught up in all the chaos.

• Do NOT drink the water, resorts provide plenty of bottled water to drink.

• Allow your guests to enjoy their vacation, plan some events but don't overwhelm them with your itineraries

• Host a welcome party, doesn't have to be elaborate - pick a bar/lounge area and thank everyone for coming, let them mingle.

• At the welcome party, hand out your welcome bags

• Be cautious about vendors on the beach

• With local vendors be prepared to be hassled relentlessly, they are persistent.

• Bring a lot of $1 bills. Tipping is not mandatory but is very much appreciated - Bartenders, Servers, Room Attendants, Gardeners etc. A little goes a long way.

• Each day is filled with fun and interesting activities, check the resort bulletin board for daily events.

• Use your room safe - goes without saying.

• Bring lots of sunscreen!

• Fellas be sure to bring closed two shoes and long pants for some rstaurants.

• Resort bank machines may not provide your native currency

• WiFi is not always that reliable or fast, however it's plenty-good for checking email etc.

• Put together a room number list with all guests on it, will make things SO much easier.

• Check and double check departure times with your airline rep

• Learn some key words in Spanish ie. water, please, thank you etc. Here's a great site to help: Spanish Dictionary

When you arrive at your resort, your airline rep will hold a brief orientation meeting - try and attend, they'll give you all the ins and outs of the resort and country.  Plus, they generally have plenty of drinks on hand.
