A local photographer’s guide to getting married in Muskoka.
I’ve photographed weddings across Muskoka for more than 15 years. These venues are here because I’ve seen how a wedding day comes together at them: how the timeline unfolds, how guests move through the space and selfishly… how great they are for photos.
The best location isn’t the same for everyone, but maybe I can show you some of my faves and ease any venue commitment issues.

For a classic lakeside setting, start with Sherwood Inn or Severn Lodge. Consider Trillium for a woodland resort weekend, Rocky Crest for a waterfront ceremony and marquee reception, or Muskoka Bay for contemporary spaces and elevated views. Northbrook Farm is a garden alternative near Orillia.

Different settings, different strengths. Here’s what stands out to me, along with a few practical things to ask before booking.
Severn / Orillia · south Muskoka
Northbrook Farm
Northbrook Farm is a stunning option if you’re drawn to beautiful garden landscapes. Just outside Orillia in Severn Township, its century farmhouse, towering trees, pond and perennial gardens give you several different settings in one property. It sits on the south end of Muskoka, but belongs on the shortlist if you’re also considering the Orillia area.
From behind the camera: Northbrook is one of my favorite venues to shoot with its endless photo opportunities. Build a little extra time into your timeline so you can enjoy them without rushing.
Before booking: Ask what your package includes, which vendors you need to arrange, and where guests will stay after the reception.

Sherwood Inn
Sherwood Inn is one of my favourite settings for a classic Muskoka wedding. The Lake Joseph waterfront, mature trees and on-site rooms make it easy to picture a wedding weekend here. The resort offers exclusive-use weddings; ask how that works for your date and guest count.
From behind the camera: The waterfront is a beautiful place for late-afternoon portraits. Ask about the Boathouse for getting ready — I particularly like its natural light.
Before booking: For a small wedding or elopement, ask about the right package rather than assuming you need a full resort buyout. Also ask about access to the waterfront ceremony area for guests who find stairs difficult.
Port Sydney · Devine Lake
Trillium Resort & Spa
Between Bracebridge and Huntsville, Trillium combines forest, waterfront and a post-and-beam lodge. Its current wedding information lists reception space for up to 120 people and accommodation for up to 66 overnight guests across 17 private spaces. That difference matters when you’re working out who can stay on site.
From behind the camera: The forest trails, rock features, waterfront and lodge interiors give us plenty of variety. A Friday-night bonfire can also be a nice way to bring everyone together before the wedding.
Before booking: Confirm exclusive-use arrangements, the accommodation allocation and seasonal minimums. Trillium hosts weddings year-round, including families with children.

Rocky Crest Golf Resort
Rocky Crest combines the Lake Joseph resort experience with a ceremony setting overlooking Armishaw Lake. The pines, water and marquee reception space give it a distinctly cottage-country feel, with suites, villas, cabins and cottages available on the property.
From behind the camera: Leave about 15 minutes for portraits near sunset. The open sky and reflections along the water are worth making room for, and the marquee photographs beautifully in soft evening light.
Before booking: Confirm where your ceremony and reception will take place, how guests move between them, and what happens if the weather changes.
Gravenhurst · Muskoka
Muskoka Bay Resort
Muskoka Bay is a strong choice if you love Muskoka’s landscape but prefer a more contemporary setting. The elevated clubhouse, granite and golf-course views offer a different look from the traditional lakeside lodge. Hotel and residence accommodation makes a wedding weekend possible without sending everyone to separate properties.
From behind the camera: Getting ready close to your venue helps keep the day relaxed. Because accommodation is spread around the resort, build the actual travel time into your plans rather than treating “on site” as “next door.”
Before booking: Ask which spaces suit your guest count and how the on-site shuttle connects your accommodation, ceremony and reception.

Severn Lodge
Severn Lodge brings together a classic cottage-resort atmosphere, woodland and the waterfront on Gloucester Pool in Muskoka’s Georgian Bay area. It’s worth considering if you want your guests to settle in and spend time together around the wedding, rather than simply arrive for dinner.
From behind the camera: The shoreline and wooded surroundings give us lake views and natural backdrops without leaving the property. The waterfront ceremony setting is a big part of its appeal.
Before booking: Request the current wedding kit for available dates, guest minimums and accommodation requirements. Confirm which meals and activities are included in your particular package.

These are worth exploring if you want a different atmosphere, a larger resort or a destination farther into cottage country.
Near Sundridge · Almaguin Highlands, north of Muskoka
Northridge Inn
Northridge sits on Lake Bernard in the Almaguin Highlands, north of Muskoka. Its waterfront, distinctive accommodation and boutique resort feel make it worth the extra distance if you’re open to a broader cottage-country search. The venue describes its weddings as exclusive bookings of the resort.
Before booking: Confirm the room allocation, minimum stay and travel arrangements for guests. Treat this as a destination of its own when comparing travel times with Port Carling or Gravenhurst.

Windermere House
Known as the Lady of the Lake, Windermere House offers a very recognisable Muskoka setting overlooking Lake Rosseau. The lawn ceremony space, covered verandah and Islandview reception room give the day a natural progression from the lake views to dinner. Its Victorian-style exterior brings a different character from a rustic lodge.
Before booking: Ask to see both the outdoor ceremony layout and the rain plan. The venue currently lists the Islandview Room for up to 120 guests; confirm the layout with your dance floor and tables included.

Arowhon Pines
Arowhon Pines is inside Algonquin Provincial Park, rather than Muskoka itself. It belongs here as an alternative for couples who want to be surrounded by forest and water. Cabins and the lakeside setting make this feel like a real escape. The resort also offers elopements, as well as options for gathering friends and family.
Before booking: Check seasonal opening dates, cabin availability and the arrangements for your group. Include the drive into the park when planning arrivals and your photography timeline.

Deerhurst Resort
Deerhurst is worth a look when guest accommodation and a choice of event spaces are high on your list. It offers indoor and outdoor wedding settings, plenty for guests to do and weddings in every season. I’ve photographed winter weddings here too, so it’s an option beyond the usual summer weekend.
Before booking: Tour the specific spaces being proposed for your wedding. On a larger property, the distance between rooms, ceremony, portraits and dinner is more useful than simply knowing everything is at the same resort.

Rawley Resort
Rawley sits beside the Trent–Severn Waterway in Port Severn, on the Severn Township side of the Muskoka gateway. The water, rocks and trees give it the cottage-country atmosphere couples often come north for. It’s another option to compare if you’re considering an intimate waterfront wedding and staying in the Port Severn area.
Before booking: Request the current wedding brochure and confirm the ceremony space, indoor alternative and accommodation arrangements for your group.

Before you book your Muskoka wedding venue
The view might get a venue onto your shortlist. These details help you decide whether the whole day will work there.
- Compare the full cost for the same guest count. Ask for a quote that separates the venue, food and beverage minimums, accommodation commitments, rentals, service charges and taxes. A lower starting price doesn’t always mean a lower total.
- See the rain plan. Ask where the ceremony moves, who makes the weather decision and whether the backup space needs to be reset for dinner. Make sure you like that version of the day too.
- Guest options. Check the distance and terrain between parking, rooms, ceremony, cocktails and dinner. Ask about stairs, accessible washrooms and transportation, and look for amenities your guests can enjoy, such as waterfront access, outdoor activities or comfortable places to relax.
- Plan photography around the day you want. Talk through the timeline with your photographer and wedding coordinator. They can help plan the getting-ready photos, family photos and portraits around your day, so you can spend more time enjoying it with your guests.
A smaller guest list
Planning a small wedding or elopement?
Sherwood Inn, Trillium, Severn Lodge and Rawley are worth asking about if you’re drawn to a smaller resort celebration. Arowhon Pines also offers elopements if you’re happy to head into Algonquin Park. Ask each venue which space and package suit your actual guest count: a small wedding doesn’t automatically mean a small minimum spend.
Already have a family cottage in mind? It can be a meaningful alternative. Before committing, check permission to host an event, parking, washrooms, catering access, neighbour considerations and a workable rain plan.
