Planning a surprise proposal in Muskoka or along Georgian Bay? Based near Orillia, I photograph proposals throughout Huntsville, Parry Sound and Barrie. I’ll help you choose the right location, coordinate the timing and discreetly photograph the moment.
Whether you need help choosing where to propose, what time of day or how to plan your proposal - I’ve got your back. With 10+ years of experience photographing proposals, I’ve learned a thing or two. And so far, I’m batting a thousand - they’ve all said yes. I might be good luck.
Have a Plan.
First up, brainstorming. How are you planning to propose? Consider what your partner would love the most, something true to your relationship. Think of ways you can make the moment special for your person like a location that’s meaningful, a favourite memory or date - or maybe something completely new that you both have always wanted to do or see.
Then it’s time to work on the cover-story to keep it all secret.
Timing.
Timing is a big factor and I can help you with that. Think about a time of year where you can consider the vibe you’re going for. Location, setting, seasonal attire like cozy sweaters in fall or ice skating in winter maybe?
The other thing about timing is time of day. Speak with your photographer about what they suggest - most will aim for those beautiful few hours before sunset or just after sunrise. This isn’t a rule, but the lighting at that time of day provides the most flattering light.
Hiring a Proposal Photographer
As your proposal photographer, I’m also your planning partner. We’ll talk through the location, timing, cover story and logistics so you know exactly where to be for a great photo when the moment arrives.

Yes. Cottages, docks and lakes can provide beautiful, personal settings with plenty of privacy. I would say these are generally my most popular locations.
Proposal Location Ideas
Location ideas to pop the question are endless across Ontario. In my area alone there are so many wonderful options to suit everything from the adventurous, outdoorsy types to the relaxed, walk in the park type couples.
Muskoka Wharf
The docks at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst are a nice backdrop with classic lake views, heritage boats and nearby resorts. If you want a little more privacy, there’s a scenic lookout right next to the Wharf. Both are easily accessible and easy to disguise as a normal day or weekend trip.
Cottage Rental
Renting a cottage in Muskoka is a strong proposal option because it offers privacy, natural beauty and flexibility. A family or friend’s cottage can add sentimental value, while a short-term rental provides lake views, docks, sunsets and quiet surroundings without crowds. Staying for a few days at an Airbnb allows the proposal to happen naturally and gives you cover to plan a special moment without suspicion.
Killbear Provincial Park
If you’re an outdoorsy couple, spending a day or two exploring the Georgian Bay shoreline near Parry Sound is perfect cover to pop the question. Killbear is home to the famous Killbear Tree, a windswept pine near campsite 320 in the Beaver Dams Campground area.
Muskoka resorts
Muskoka also offers many resort options that combine comfort, privacy, and classic scenery. Resorts like Sherwood Inn, Rocky Crest, JW Marriott, Windermere House, Touchstone Resort provide accommodations with lake views, forested grounds and on-site dining. These resorts make planning easier by combining beautiful surroundings, accommodations and dining in one convenient location.
Skating at Arrowhead
The skating trail at Arrowhead Provincial Park is a great setting for a winter themed proposal. Located in Huntsville, there are plenty of accommodations and attractions in the area to make a weekend of it.
Golf Course
If you and your partner are golfers, the region has plenty of beautiful courses to choose from. Propose at a scenic hole along the way or wait until you hole out on the 18th. Either way, a golf course provides a natural cover story and a memorable backdrop. A few great options: Muskoka Bay (Gravenhurst), Manitou Ridge (Parry Sound), Rocky Crest (MacTier) and Braestone Club near Orillia.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING“It’s impossible to overstate how incredible Vaughn is! When I needed a photographer for my proposal, Vaughn went above and beyond to perfectly capture the moment.”

Consider things like the sentimental value of the location, the backdrop, privacy level and if the location provides cover for your proposal plan.
-
If your partner is anything like my wife, her spidey sense can tell when something’s up. A plausible cover story is crucial to keep your proposal a surprise. We can work out the details together if you’re having trouble with it.
-
We’ll work out the timeline for events together and I’ll be in discreet contact with you leading up to the moment. Every proposal is different, but typically we’ll have signals and cues in place. I keep these super simple so you can keep your focus where it belongs… in the moment.
-
You’ll want to share the great news afterwards so once you’ve had a chance to enjoy the moment, we’ll do a very brief photo session with the two of you + the ring. Then you’re off to celebrate. I’ll send you a few quick shots later that day or the next morning. The remaining photos you’ll have within a week typically.
