Should You Hire a Wedding Photographer for the Full Day or Just a Few Hours?
How Much Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Actually Need?
One of the most common questions couples ask is whether they should book a wedding photographer for the entire day or just a few hours.
The answer depends on your wedding plans, priorities and budget - but for many couples, full-day coverage isn’t always necessary.
Personally, my favourite amount of coverage is usually 4–5 hours because it often gives couples the best balance of meaningful coverage without turning the entire wedding day into an all-day photoshoot.
I break down a sample timeline in more detail here: 5 Hour Wedding Timeline Guide
What Can Be Covered in 4–5 Hours?
With a well-planned timeline, 4–5 hours is often enough time to capture:
Ceremony coverage
Family photos
Bridal party portraits
Couples portraits
Guest candids
Reception entrance
First dance
For many weddings, especially smaller weddings, cottage weddings, backyard weddings and intimate celebrations, this amount of time comfortably covers the moments couples care about most.
Benefits of Shorter Wedding Photography Coverage
Hiring a photographer for fewer hours can:
Reduce overall cost
Create a more relaxed timeline
Keep the focus on the most meaningful moments
Avoid feeling photographed all day
Simplify the wedding schedule
Many couples are surprised how much can realistically fit into a 4–5 hour window when the timeline is planned properly.
When Full-Day Coverage Makes More Sense
Full-day wedding photography is usually the better option if:
You want getting ready photos for each of you
You have multiple venues or travel between locations
Your reception and dancing are important to capture
You’re planning cultural traditions throughout the day
You’re hosting a large wedding with a longer schedule
In those situations, shorter coverage can feel rushed.
So… Full Day or Just a Few Hours?
If your priority is documenting the full story of the day from morning until late at night, full-day coverage may be worth it.
But if your focus is capturing the key moments while keeping the day relaxed, intentional and budget-conscious, 4–5 hours is often the sweet spot.
The right amount of coverage isn’t about booking the most hours possible — it’s about building a timeline that fits your wedding naturally.
